It's been a big month for Saint Motel. In the last four weeks they've released their debut album, Voyeur, to critical acclaim, wrapped a US headlining tour and dropped an odd yet whimsical music video for 1997.

To celebrate the launch of the music video, frontman AJ Jackson was nice enough to invite me to his home studio for a private performance of 1997. "Let's turn off the lights," he said as he switched on a projector and blasted the rest of the band with the classic SMPTE color bars. And with that act of artistic forethought we shot a music video-esq live performance... to, uh... celebrate their new music video. I know, it's so post-modern.

The ACTUAL music video was shot at the Dresden in Los Angeles and depicts sinister versions of world famous lounge singers, Marty & Elayne, taking the band on an out-of-body experience.

Although The Dresden works perfectly within the world they created, it was not the original location choice for the band.

"The night before I was leaving for Vegas to scout some locations for the 1997 video, my friend invited me out to some store opening right down the street from the Dresden. When that party ended we randomly went to the Dresden for a drink. I'd been there many times before but that night, as I watched Marty & Elayne play Sinatra (most likely for the one millionth time), I realized, 'this is it, this is where we need to shoot this video.'"

Check out this live performance of 1997. It will send you on a three and a half minute out-of-body experience.
