Ashton Kutcher may not have played the smartest character in Dude, Where's My Car?, but he certainly had some interesting theories about the film, which he predicted to be a pioneer in the comedy genre.

In this Pop Culture Rewind, Kutcher is being interviewed in 2000 about the film on its set and seizes the opportunity to share his theory about what Dude will do for comedy with its unique style, which he calls a "new type of comedy."

"I think it's a different kind of comedy in the sense that...people have seen these spoofy comedies; I think people have seen this new shocker, Farrelly brothers (screenwriters: Dumb & Dumber, Shallow Hal, etc.) type of comedy; and I think people have seen the old type [of] comedy, which was very reality-driven...I think that this movie...takes elements of each of those types and puts them into one," Kutcher says in the featured flashback.

While the film received mostly poor reviews from the critics, it did well at the box office with $73 million in ticket sales ($97 million when considering inflation) and may have created an appetite for the stoner comedy genre, which has essentially taken over the comedy film industry.

"It's really amazing how all the different elements of comedy and different kinds of comedy are combined into one in the movie," the then-22-year-old actor adds.

Kutcher's insight creates a large discussion about the stoner comedy genre. Are these films popular for their crafty incorporation of the various integral elements of comedy or can we give stoner comedy films that much credit?

Regardless, it is a different kind of comedy.
